Environmental pollution: the question of human right
By Monirul Alam

Over the last two decades environmental pollution in Bangladesh has turned into a health time bomb. The industrial effluent and household solid waste including garbage have contaminated the environment so much that the water in Dhaka is no longer safe to drink. The smoke emitted by Dhaka's 20 000-odd two-stroke engine motor cycles causes serious respiratory problems, especially for children.

Dhaka City is struggling to cope with industrial and household waste management. People, who are its biggest beneficiaries of the river Buriganga, frequently throw all kinds of garbage into the river including industrial and chemical wastes. In this picture a boat owner is seen to have made a fire to melt coal tar while man washes
rice in the river’s contaminated waters nearby. 000
