In the news on Bangladesh Television last night,
the prime minister Sheikh Hasina made a fervent
request, primarily directed to the opposition,
to desist from 'emptying another mother's lap'.
Nodding to the rhetoric in the front seat were
Awami League MPs Iqbal and Maya, who directly,
and through family ties, have been recently
involved in blatant killings and deliberate
acts of coercion. Needless to say, these powerful
men who happen to be lawmakers, rather than
being brought to trial, continue to adorn the
front seats of major public events. The rhetoric
has never been limited to the ruling party,
or any specific government. Neither has the
media been spared the wrath of an angry political
party. The recent report by The Committee to
Protect Journalists (CPJ) highlights the dangers
journalists have been facing in the last year.
With elections approaching, violence is on the
increase, and the rhetoric has never been farther
from the truth.
