The XV International Congress of Anthropological & Ethnological Sciences will be held in Florence, Italy during 5-12 July, 2003. I am happy to inform that the following session proposed by me has been accepted :

The concept of Human Rights is a dynamic one which covers new areas as human society continues to evolve. The original concept was limited to civil and political rights of the individual. But with the realization that without guaranteeing economic, social and cultural rights, full enjoyment of civil and political rights is not possible has led to the inclusion of economic, social and cultural rights. The concept of human rights now cover right to self determination, right regarded as belonging to peoples rather than individuals, right to sovereignty over natural wealth and resources of the country and right to development as well as rights of disadvantaged groups to special protection. The issue of Human Rights is inherent and universal, but we have been witnessing to severe violation of human rights which take various expressions ranging from deprivation of basic needs and discrimination against women, children, Dalit, tribal, ethnic, linguistic and other minorities. These have resulted in conflict, insurgency and general restiveness of the people resulting to their eviction, migration and untold sufferings. Global political and economic regimes and dominant development model in this era of globalization have resulted in the massive depletion of natural resources and exploitation of human labour leading to further marginalization and impoverishment of the people. However, there may be positive effects of globalization in reducing the cases of human rights violation. Now as cases or instances of human rights violation are known very quickly with improved communication facilities, mobilization against human rights violation becomes quicker and easier. Again, even though human rights have legal dimensions, in many cases, the instances of human rights violations are the result or product of the existing socio-economic system. Thus anthropology, with its holistic approach, can contribute much in understanding the problems of human rights.

Considering your keen interest and significant contribution, I warmly invite you to contribute a paper in my session. Please send the abstract of your paper (10-12 lines) within 25th December,2002. Please mention your full name, complete address including Phone, Fax and E.mail ID, Institution and three key words.
