BASUG celebrates "Bangladesh Day" in Holland : vow to fight poverty

The Hague, 26 Sept 2005: With a solemn vow to fight poverty and improve the condition of poor women and children in Bangladesh, the "Bangladesh Day" programme ended here recently in the port city of Rotterdam. Organised by BASUG (Bangladesh Support Group) the day arouse huge enthusiasms and drew a large number of spectators from Belgium, Germany, France and of course, from different parts of Holland at the Gandhi hall. Despite the 'car-free' day in Brussels on the day, Bangladeshis living over there came by 14 cars with special permissions from the local municipal authority to attend the programme.
The programme of the day which was sponsored by Novib-Oxfam Netherlands, Seva Network Foundation and Triveni included solo-photo exhibition of Bangladeshi women and children by Azizur Rahim Peu, Photographer of Daily Ittefaq and editor of www.banglarights.net, mime show by the master of mime art Partha Pratim Majumder, cultural programme, lottery draw and dinner.
'Simana Periye' and 'Surja Kanya'-famous celebrated film artist, Jayasree kabir who agreed to represent BASUG as its ambassador attended the day as special guest. In her speech she vowed to carry forward the task of the organisation aimed at the welfare of marginal poor women and children in Bangladesh. BASUG President Bikash Chowdhury Barua in his welcome speech gave a detailed description of the activities of his organisation and said that the purpose of organising such day was to draw the attention of the local poeple and various development agencies to the problems being faced by millions of poor women and children in Bangladesh. Director of Seva Network Foundation Drs. Radj Bhondoe said that his organisation was active in changing the lot of the poor people in countries like Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Suriname. Speaking on the cooperation with BASUG he assured his support to the programmes of Basug in the days ahead. Piet Luykx, representative of Novib-Oxfam Netherlands said, such initiative help draw the attention of the local peole to the problems faced by the people in poor countries. He thanked the organisers for such initiative and assured further support to them. Ms. Nellie van der Pasch of ICCO who also attended the day later talking to Basug President assured her organisation's support to such programmes next year. BASUG handed over crests to Director of Seva Drs. Radj Bhondoe, film actress Jayasree Kabir and Piet Luykx of Novib applauding their role in the fight against povertry. Noted businessman Kaiser Rashid Mintu, adviser Bikash Roy and President of Basug handed over the crests.
Master of mime art Partha Pratim Majumder's hour long performance overwhelmed the audience. There was pin drop silence when he was performing on the podium. Sangram, Sylvia and Purabi were his co-artists. The classical dances were performed by Belgium based artist Ms. Miet Belyen (dance group Aspara), Kamla & Usha (dance group KamalRoshan), Nazurl song-based dance by Sylvia (Germany), Kathak and Bharatnatyam dances by Shakshi Gopal & Satish Makhan and songs by Rahid Khandker and Indroniel Roy. The photo exhibition by Azizur Rahim Peu depicting the condition of Bangladeshi women and children also drew appreciations from the spectators. The whole programme was presented by Basug Secretary Sudhier Nannan. Prizes were distributed among the lottery winners.
