IOM begins new “UK Pre-Departure TB Detection Programme” for visa applicants traveling to the UK for more than 6 months
|
| |
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) today (3rd January, 2006) inaugurated the first IOM clinic of three in three districts in conjunction with MEDINOVA Medical Services Limited to begin implementing the “United Kingdom (UK) Pre-Departure Tuberculosis (TB) Detection Programme.” The clinic was formally inaugurated by Dr. Frank Gutmann, International Migration Health Physician-Consultant, IOM. Among others, Mr. Md. Shahidul Haque - IOM Regional Representative for South Asia, Mr. Md. Mozammel Hossain - Chairman of MEDINOVA, Mr. Lawson Ross - Director of Visa Services of the British High Commission in Bangladesh and other staff members of IOM were also present.
Under the programme, all UK visa applicants (visitors and short-term students are not included) aged 11 years or older applying for a visa/entry clearance in Bangladesh for a stay of longer than 6 months must apply at IOM clinics for a health certificate confirming that they are free from infectious TB. This must be done before making a visa/entry clearance application. On receipt of the health certificate, applicants can then lodge their visa/entry clearance application in the usual manner. If, however, they are found to be suffering from infectious TB, they will be asked to seek treatment and will not be issued a visa until free from the illness. The price for the detection process will be Taka ~3700, payable in cash in advance on the day of the screening.
As part of the programme, two more IOM clinics in conjunction with MEDI-AID Diagnostic & Consultation Centre in Sylhet and SENSIV in Chittagong will be inaugurated on 5 and 8 January 2006 respectively. The contact numbers for IOM Clinics at the three locations are: MEDINOVA Medical Services Ltd, Dhaka, 8620353-7, 8624907-10 Ext 309; MEDI-AID Diagnostic & Consultant Centre, Sylhet, 0607-4342151, +880-821-815864, 718686; SENSIV, Chittagong, +880-31-616920, 615878, 615670.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a growing problem in the UK and the programme aims to deal with this problem with a minimal impact on the entry clearance process. The programme will facilitate the TB detection process and provide client-friendly services. The new scheme aims to identify migrants with infectious TB so that they can be treated before entry into the UK. This programme will support the long-term migrants in immigration as well as assist the UK Government to tackle the public health impact of TB in the UK. The Government of UK already has started the programme in Thailand, Tanzania and Sudan in its first phase and other countries will be included in the programme later this year. (IOM press release)
