22 percent of country's population poor, destitute women

Dhaka, Feb 6 (BDNEWS)- About 22 percent of the total population of the country are poor and destitute women. According to women affairs directorate, there are 17,39,542 poor and destitute women in the country.
"The women affairs directorate has taken several employment-generation programmes for the destitute women," said Women and Children Affairs Minister Khurshid Jahan Haque while replying to a question of ruling party MP Mohamad Ali Jinnah in Jatiya Sangsad Monday.
Replying to another question of Golam Habib Dulal, she said the government has a plan to broadcast a documentary for creating awareness aimed at stopping women repression in the country.
Immediate steps would be taken after publishing story related to women repression in newspapers, the minister added.
